Reduction of p-nitrophenol (PNP) to p-aminophenol (PAP) has been carri
ed out over supported nickel and unpromoted and promoted Raney nickel
catalysts at 110 degrees C and hydrogen pressures at 200 psig. Excelle
nt conversions ranging from. 85% to 93% have been obtained with these
catalysts after optimizing the process parameters. Nickel catalysts pr
ovided attractive alternate substitute to conventional commercial Fe d
egrees/H+ catalysts which pose stupendous environmental problems.
