P. Domenico et al., SODIUM-SALICYLATE EXHIBITS DIVERSE EFFECTS ON THE ACTIVITY OF TETRACYCLINES AGAINST GRAM-NEGATIVE BACTERIA, Medical microbiology letters, 2(3), 1993, pp. 138-144
Salicylate interferes with the activity of most antibiotics, particula
rly the tetracyclines, against gram-negative bacteria. The degree of a
ntagonism is based on several criteria, including the salicylate dose,
the class of tetracycline, and the mechanism of tetracycline resistan
ce found among bacteria. High-dose salicylate shows only marginal effe
cts on efflux-mediated, tetracycline-resistant bacteria, since two pot
ent salicylate effects tend to cancel each other out.
