Abstract
Eighteen patients with chronic low back pain were interviewed before a nd after a programme of conservative treatment and again 4 months late r. Measures were made of severity and attitude towards disability, inc luding the Kelly Repertory Grid. The best predictor of improvement was the degree of meaningfulness of the concept 'self in pain' as measure d by the Repertory Grid.
