M. Soroush et C. Kravaris, OPTIMAL-DESIGN AND OPERATION OF BATCH REACTORS .1. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK, Industrial & engineering chemistry research, 32(5), 1993, pp. 866-881
In this work, we propose a framework for integrated design and operati
on of single-stage batch or semibatch reactors. This includes systemat
ic decoupling of optimization and design through conceptual decomposit
ion of the reactor dynamics into two subsystems with distinct characte
ristics. In this framework, notions of feasibility, flexibility, contr
ollability, and safety of the design for batch processes are introduce
d for the first time and some criteria for their assessment are presen
ted. The proposed framework includes (a) mathematical modeling of the
process dynamics, (b) dynamic optimization that involves simultaneous
optimization of loading conditions and operating temperature and/or co
ncentration profiles, (c) design of the heat exchange and/or feeding s
ystem(s) and investigation of process operability (feasibility, flexib
ility, controllability, and safety of the design), and (d) design of a
control scheme for automatic startup and optimal operation of the rea
ctor.
