Hypersonic flow past a body entering the earth's atmosphere on a glide
path is studied. The computational results for the heat fluxes and th
e surface temperature obtained using different approximations for the
VV' relaxation time are compared with one another. The source terms in
the vibrational-relaxation equations are estimated and it is shown th
at the back effect of chemical reactions on the vibrational-energy bal
ance must be taken into account.
