A refined mathematical model and numerical method are presented to cal
culate heat and mass transfer processes in a thermal shield system bas
ed on coolant evaporation from a capillary-porous material into an inn
er cavity of the protected structure. Phenomena are examined which ori
ginate at the warmup stage for a large initial coolant content in the
capillary-porous material. The effect of various problem parameters on
the value of the limiting initial coolant content for which liquid do
es not flow from the porous material is determined.
