El. Clennan et K. Yang, THE ORIGIN OF THE SULFONE IN PHOTOOXIDATIONS INVOLVING SULFURANE INTERMEDIATES, Heteroatom chemistry, 4(2-3), 1993, pp. 197-201
The photooxidations of gamma-hydroxysulfides which give abnormally hig
h yields of sulfones have been investigated. This unusual result is at
tributed to the potent trapping ability of a hydrogen bonded sulfoxide
intermediate. This suggestion is supported by measuring the ability o
f a gamma-hydroxysulfoxide to trap the persulfoxide formed in the phot
ooxidation of diethyl sulfide and by careful analysis of the reaction
composition as a function of time.
