Abstract
Using a polarisation-maintaining erbium-doped fibre near the zero disp ersion wavelength and a bulk InGaAsP saturable absorber, the authors p assively modelock a fibre laser to generate nearly transform-limited 3 20 fs pulses with 40 pJ energy. The laser produces a stable state of l inear polarisation and the semiconductor, which acts both as a slow an d fast saturable absorber, self-starts the laser.
