Abstract
It is argued that elementary quanta of an open system are determined b y the spectral decomposition of a thermodynamic Hamiltonian, not an or dinary Hamiltonian. Recently observed spectral shifts in semiconductor s irradiated with two simultaneous laser pulses may be the manifestati on of this fundamental role of the thermodynamic Hamiltonian.
