Abstract
We present a new method to measure in situ the amplitude of the retard ation for a photoelastic modulator polarimeter using single photon cou nting techniques. The method allows the simultaneous measurement of li near and circular polarization of light without the need for a separat e calibration procedure. Comparison with measurements made with a lamb da/4-retarder polarimeter show excellent agreement, confirming the met hod used.
