Ic. Sutcliffe et N. Shaw, THE PHOSPHOLIPIDS OF PROPIONIBACTERIUM-FREUDENREICHII - ABSENCE OF PHOSPHATIDYLINOSITOL MANNOSIDES, Systematic and applied microbiology, 16(1), 1993, pp. 9-12
The phospholipids of Propionibacterium freudenreichii were purified an
d examined for the presence of phosphatidylinositol mannosides. None c
ould be detected. The major phospholipids were bis(phosphatidyl)glycer
ol, phosphatidylglycerol, and phosphatidylinositol. This lipid composi
tion is consistent with the relatedness of propionibacteria to the act
inomycetes. The previously reported ability of P. freudenreichii to sy
nthesise phosphatidylinositol monomannoside in vitro may relate to the
biosynthesis of the inositol-containing lipomannan which replaces lip
oteichoic acid in this bacterium.
