Developing a special piston rough vacuum pump for medical application,
the realization of sealing between piston and cylinder wag was an ess
ential problem. To this aim efforts were made in searching for the mos
t adequate gasket shape and material. In the case of O-type elastomer
ring the squeezing of the torus in the groove during functioning depen
ds on piston and cylinder dimensions. Pressures appearing in the gaske
t material influence the sealing quality and consequently the pumping
speed. Pistons with different groove size for elastomer gasket were us
ed in the experimental pump and their characteristics were compared.
