YBa2Cu3O7-x thin films have been grown on (100) MgO substrates by the
Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) technique. Films properties of relevance
for microwave applications were studied for different substrate prepa
ration and deposition parameters. It is reported on the influence of c
omposition deviations, substrate surface preparation and deposition pa
rameters on Tc (R=0), Jc (77 K), the crystalline texture and the surfa
ce morphology of the films. An improvement of the PLD technique aimed
at the optimizing of HTS thin film growth for electronics and microwav
e systems is proposed.
