Inappropriate elimination is a common behavioral problem that requires
a substantial medical work-up and rigorous follow-up. Aversions to su
bstrates or locations, preferences that lead a cat to choosing another
location or substrate for elimination, and how these inclinations dev
elop are discussed. Prior to treatment, all underlying medical problem
s must be ruled out. Should there be no apparent medical cause, treatm
ent can proceed initially with diazepam. Other treatment options are a
vailable, and side effects of drug treatment therapies are provided.
