Abstract
Nitrogen implantation by plasma source ion implantation was conducted on Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The wear performance was characterized using a pin -on-disk wear tester and an alpha-step profilometer. Nitrogen concentr ation depth profiles of implanted samples were studied using a scannin g Auger microprobe. It is found that the lowest wear rate in the impla nted zone corresponds to the nitrogen concentration peak. By varying t he target temperature, the nitrogen concentration profile was engineer ed to achieve a better wear behavior. The pin-on-disk wear data agree with the expected result.
