Abstract
Dysfunction of the immune system can result in opportunistic infection s, which are frequently responsible for high morbidity and mortality. With regard to surgery, opportunistic infections are found in specific risk groups, including individuals with tumors, AIDS, thermic or mech anical trauma and organ transplantation. These infections can be cause d by bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa. If there are indications o f a possible opportunistic infection, a rapid diagnosis is required, f ollowed by immediate therapeutic intervention.
