Thirteen patients who underwent surgery for retinal detachment and inj
ection of intraocular tamponade media (silicone oil, fluorosilicone oi
l, or perfluorocarbon liquid) underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MR
I), using spin-echo T1- and T2-weighted images. The ophthalmic tampona
de media showed different signal intensity, according to their chemica
l structure. Unlike ophthalmoscopy or ultrasonography, MRI showed no o
il-related artefact, making possible recognition of recurrent retinal
detachment.
