Abstract
The Balquhidder experimental catchments have been in operation since 1 981; the main objective is to study the effects of forest management p ractices on water resources in the Highlands of Scotland. The characte ristics of the Kirkton and Monachyle catchments are described together with the instrumentation which has been installed since 1983. The pap er provides the background information which is common to the followin g 13 scientific papers.
