The epidemiology, etiology and natural history of cardiomyopathies in
children are still largely unknown but supposed to differ from those o
f adults. High mortality rates and lack of specific therapy are typica
l for this heterogenous group of heart diseases. In recent years, the
application of the techniques of molecular biology has provided new in
formation about the possible etiologies of both hypertrophic and dilat
ed cardiomyopathy. However, much experimental and clinical research is
needed for better understanding of the pathogenesis of cardiomyopathi
es and for developing treatment and prevention.
