A wet chemical synthetic route is presented for the preparation of a s
pherical quantum well. The quantum well consists of a core of size-qua
ntized CdS, a monolayer of HgS and approximately four monolayers of Cd
S as the outermost shell. The total diameter of these particles exhibi
ting unique optical properties is about 80 A. The route described open
s the way for the generation of quantum dot quantum wells (QDQW) with
variable layer thicknesses as well as for compounds composed from more
than two materials.
