B. Boldrin et al., DEGRADATION OF PHENANTHRENE, FLUORENE, FLUORANTHENE, AND PYRENE BY A MYCOBACTERIUM SP, Applied and environmental microbiology, 59(6), 1993, pp. 1927-1930
Mycobacterium sp. strain BB1 was isolated from a former coal gasificat
ion site. It was able to utilize phenanthrene, pyrene, and fluoranthen
e as sole sources of carbon and energy and to degrade fluorene cometab
olically. Exponential growth with solid phenanthrene, pyrene, and fluo
ranthene was obtained in fermentor cultures. The growth rates were 0.0
69, 0.056, and 0.040 h-1, respectively. Several metabolites of phenant
hrene and fluorene metabolism were identified.
