Strategies for the prophylaxis and therapy of non-steroidal anti-infla
mmatory drug- (NSAID) induced gastroduodenal lesions include: drugs wh
ich reduce the hydrogenic intragastric concentration, for example, H-2
-receptor antagonists, antacids and proton pump inhibitors; site and c
ytoprotective drugs, and synthetic prostaglandins. Available data sugg
est that established duodenal and small gastric ulcers usually heal wi
th various therapeutic regimens despite continued NSAID use. In this r
eview, we consider the effects of the agents mentioned above in the he
aling of NSAID-induced lesions.
