Studies of the safety and reliability of secondary lithium batteries (
Li/MoS2) have included the effects of cell failures in multicell batte
ry packs. Both premature and normal end-of-life failures have been con
sidered. Methods suitable for the development of realistic estimates f
or safety and reliability, without resorting to impractical, high volu
me test regimes, are described. A number of common failure modes and t
heir effect upon multicell Li/MoS2 batteries are also described, along
with test regimes suitable for quantifying the effects.
