The crystal and molecular structure of an oblique bis-zinc porphyrin 1
-1 0 phenanthroline has been solved. Its geometrical features, regula
r spacing and tilt angles of the porphyrin rings of independent units
in the crystal cell are compared to the chromophore arrangement found
in the Photosynthetic Reaction Centre. The present situation displays
analogy with the mutual disposition of the pair of chromophores partic
ipating in the primary electron transfer process: a bacteriochlorophyl
of the special pair and a bacteriopheophytin.
