Ca. Rawlings et al., ANSWERS TO TYPICAL QUESTIONS ON HEARTWORM PROBLEMS, The Compendium on continuing education for the practicing veterinarian, 15(5), 1993, pp. 711
Practitioners are frequently presented with pets with challenging prob
lems and clients with difficult questions. The seven questions present
ed in this article were selected from typical questions that the autho
rs were asked about heartworm disease. The authors respond in alphabet
ic order with their recommendations, which are based on a combination
of clinical experience and interpretation of the research literature.
The rationale for each recommendation follows. The different recommend
ations indicate the variation in management of specific cases, and no
attempt was made to establish a consensus. A consensus concerning the
general approach to diagnosis, treatment, and prevention to heartworm
disease is presented triennially as the ''Recommended Procedures'' by
the American Heartworm Society.
