A convenient, mild preparation of poly(2,5-dibutoxy-1,4-phenylenevinyl
ene) (DBOPPV) using a modified precursor route is reported. The conver
sion of the. methoxy pendent precursor polymer into its conjugated for
m is performed in chloroform by the elimination of methanol at room te
mperature, yielding DBOPPV as a red solution. The elimination is thoug
ht to be catalysed by the acid photoproducts of chloroform.
