Abstract
We describe a novel transition between stationary hexagonal and rectan gular patterns, which is mediated by spatial modulations as the stress parameter is varied. The model equation studied can be derived from a Lyapunov functional and is expected to be applicable for systems show ing spatial variations on large length scales.
