Miscibility studies have been carried out between chiral 1-methylhepty
l-terephthalidene-bis-amino-cinnamate (MHTAC) and chiral carbonyl)-phe
nyl-4'-octyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylate (MHPOBC). An uninterrupted misci
bility is observed between the SmO phase of MHTAC and the antiferroele
ctric SmC phase of MHPOBC indicating thereby that these smectic modifi
cations belong to the same phase type. In addition, the antiferroelect
ric properties of MHTAC have been studied. Above a threshold electric
field the SmO phase is transformed into a ferroelectric switching stat
e which exhibits a maximum spontaneous polarization of about 380 nC/cm
