The rates of dissociation of water molecules close lo the surface of a
n MA-40 membrane were studied with respect to the influence of complex
compounds formed between ionogenic groups of the membrane and transit
ion metal ions Cu2+, Fe3+, Co2+, and Ni2+. The effective transport num
bers of Cl-, OH-, and Na+ ions were measured in a membrane modified wi
th transition metal ions and placed in 0.01 M NaCl solution. A mechani
sm for dissociation of the water molecules in the electric field was s
uggested which involves the complex compounds formed between the trans
ition metal ions and the amino groups of the MA-40 membrane.
