Abstract
The crystal and molecular structures of methyl alpha-L-fucopyranoside are reported. The sugar ring has the expected C-1(4) conformation. The H-1 NMR spectrum at 600 MHz was fully analysed. The conformation of t he pyranose ring in solution, derived from 3J(HH) values, was very sim ilar to that in the crystal. All these features have been rationalised through molecular mechanics calculations.
