Combining transesophageal two-dimensional Doppler echocardiography and
transesophageal atrial pacing provides a new alternative technique ca
pable of assessing: (i) pacing-induced left ventricular wall motion ab
normalities; (ii) pacing-induced ischemic mitral valve regurgitation;
and (iii) diagnosis and therapy of supraventricular tachyarrhythmias.
We report the background, principles, and clinical uses of this newly
developed technique combining transesophageal two-dimensional Doppler
echocardiography and transesophageal atrial pacing. Furthermore, the i
nitial results in 95 patients studied between April, 1990, and Decembe
r, 1991, are presented.
