A nucleation and growth mechanism of island formation based on the Opp
enheim-Levine-Somorjai conjecture, in which the island shape and numbe
r are controlled via the adsorption process occurring at the island ed
ges, is given to study the kinetics of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood reacti
on through Monte Carlo simulation. The calculated thermal programmed r
eaction (TPR) spectra yield the possibility to analyze (at least quali
tatively) the behavior of real systems for which island formation is s
uspected.
