This paper presents an analysis of the relative attainment of various
academic ranks for males and females at a large Midwestern university
in the 1983-87 time period. Using both cross-sectional and longitudina
l specifications, we find no evidence of differential treatment by gen
der when the level of analysis is the university as a whole, with the
gender differential in the attainment of higher ranks attributable to
differences in levels of experiences and research output. Evidence of
differential treatment is found, however, when the sample is disaggreg
ated.
