Mode energy transfer along a circular open ch waveguide is analyzed. I
t is shown that the TE0 and the TM0 are the only unperturbed modes tha
t undergo coupling processes and that if the guide is exclusively exci
ted with the TE01 mode, or the TM01, or both, only these modes are dom
inant. The energy variation along the guide is then almost periodic an
d the distance at which the energy transfer is largest is of the order
of the radius, making this device attractive as a TE <-> TM mode conv
erter, especially when a cylindrical geometry is required in a specifi
c circuit design.
