Vi. Peinado et al., HEMATOLOGY OF SPANISH IBEX (CAPRA-PYRENAICA HISPANICA) RESTRAINED BY PHYSICAL OR CHEMICAL MEANS, Veterinary record, 132(23), 1993, pp. 580-583
Reference values for some haematological and plasma biochemical consti
tuents were established in Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica hispanica) re
strained either physically or chemically with tiletamine-zolazepam. Th
e following variables were studied: haematocrit, haemoglobin concentra
tion, total erythrocyte and leucocyte counts, haematological indices,
erythrocyte dimensions, differential count of leucocytes, glucose, ure
a, uric acid, cholesterol, triglycerides, creatinine, aspartate aminot
ransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, creatinine
phosphokinase, lactic dehydrogenase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, t
otal plasma protein, albumin, globulins, albumin-globulin ratio, sodiu
m, potassium, calcium, magnesium, total phosphorus, chloride and osmol
ality. No haematological data have been published before but the value
s observed were in the general range of other artiodactyls, with the e
xception of the number and size of the erythrocytes which were respect
ively larger and smaller than in most other ruminants. Significant dif
ferences were found for a number of the variables between the values r
ecorded in physically restrained animals and the values recorded in an
aesthetised animals; they included the number of erythrocytes and rela
ted parameters, the plasma proteins and some inorganic ions.
