G. Gertken et al., EFFECTS OF INTEGRATED GROUP HOUSING OF SOWS ON BEHAVIOR, GENERAL HEALTH, AND REPRODUCTIVE TRAITS .1. BEHAVIOR, Zuchtungskunde, 65(3), 1993, pp. 180-187
The behaviour observations in the constant group of 28 sows can state
the following results: Pregnant and suckling sows can be kept in one g
roup and all sows can be fed with one transponder feeding system. This
system offers suckling sows the opportunity to leave their litters, w
hich they actually do. The constant group housing can reduce the frequ
ency and the kind of aggression. The integrated group housing features
a lower suckling frequency than the cubicle-housing. The piglets of t
he former, therefore, discontinue suckling and start to eat earlier.
