Pb. Raven, AN OVERVIEW OF THE PROBLEM - EXERCISE TRAINING AND ORTHOSTATIC INTOLERANCE, Medicine and science in sports and exercise, 25(6), 1993, pp. 702-704
The questions, whether endurance exercise training (a) induces orthost
atic intolerance and (b) alters blood pressure regulation during ortho
stasis, have been debated since the early 1970s. This symposium presen
ts data that both support and discount the concepts. In addition, data
were presented that document invasive and noninvasive techniques of m
easurement used during investigations of baroreflex and hemodynamic me
chanisms of blood pressure regulation during lower body negative press
ure (LBNP), a laboratory technique that simulates orthostasis. These t
echniques and the results obtained enabled the formulation of a hypoth
etical mechanism of explanation of the ''pro and con'' of the debated
questions.
