Characteristics of the spatial and temporal variability of tropospheri
c and low stratospheric temperatures of Argentina during the period 19
65-1982 are investigated. Empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) were u
sed to obtain the main characteristics of the vertical profile of temp
erature in three climatic regions, and time series of the temporal coe
fficients are analysed as indicators of temporal variations. The resul
ts indicate that there was an almost homogeneous upward trend in summe
r of the tropospheric temperatures (downward for stratospheric tempera
tures) in tropical and mid-latitude regions.
