The influence of a magnetic field on the geminate recombination of ion
-radicals in solutions is studied within the framework of a balance ap
proximation. In the model, the motion in a pair is described by the is
otropic diffusion in the Coulomb potential. It is assumed that the tra
nsitions between the spin states occur outside the strong exchange zon
e and are described in terms of rate constants. The effect of the medi
um polarity and viscosity on the magnitude of the magnetic field effec
t is studied. It is shown that S-T+(T-) transitions at the point of in
tersection of energy terms make a considerable contribution to the mag
netic effect and may cause a change of the sign of the magnetic field
effect at high viscosities. The influence of these transitions on the
magnetic field effect in media of different viscosity is investigated
theoretically and numerically.
