Abstract
An analysis of a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) control system u sing root locus and Nichols approaches is given. The response characte ristic of the control loop, incorporating an integrator and a single-p ole low-pass filter, is measured. Analysis shows that such a compensat ion scheme provides near optimal behaviour of the control loop and dea ls with mechanical resonance in a particularly satisfactory manner.
