The correlation of the solvatochromic fluorescence properties of 8-(ph
enylamino)-1-naphthalene-ammoniumsulfonate (8,1 ANS) in 1,4-dioxane/wa
ter mixtures with E(T)(30) and DELTAf values of the respective solvent
s shows that besides the polarity the nature of the solvent mixture de
termines the fluorescence intensity I and the Stokes shift DELTAnuBAR.
Different amounts of hydrogen-bonding are suggested to be responsible
for the different slopes of the correlation line plots.
