Abstract
The rapid modernization of pulp and paper mills, introduction of activ ated sludge treatment, and pressure to reduce die use of chlorine gas in bleaching have resulted in a rapid decrease in discharges from Finn ish pulp and paper mills. It appears that die tight targets set by the Finnish authorities for 1995 will be achieved by substantial investme nt in internal and external measures as well as by rapid changes in bl eaching practice at kraft mills.
