Zinc-coated copper specimens were irradiated with a continuous wave CO
2 laser. The laser treatment of these specimens was found to create su
rface alloys between zinc and copper on the surface of copper substrat
e. The quantity and the distribution of zinc into the copper substrate
and the intensity of the created plasma on the surface of the specime
n during its laser irradiation were found to be a function of the lase
r-power intensity and the transverse speed of the laser beam.
