Abstract
The genes for the subunits of the Fe-only hydrogenase from Desulfovibr io vulgaris are transcribed as a 1.9 kb mRNA; the operon contains no o ther genes besides those encoding the two subunits. The transcriptiona l start site of the operon was mapped. Determination of hydrogenase ac tivity and hydrogenase mRNA levels indicates a growth-phase dependent regulation of hydrogenase expression at transcriptional level. However , it has not yet been possible to localize the sequences required for regulation and expression of the genes.
