Second-order polarizabilities and excited state dipole moments of a nu
mber of donor-acceptor substituted alpha-oligothiophenes have been inv
estigated by use of electric field induced second harmonic generation
(EFISH), solvatochromism and electrooptical absorption measurements (E
OAM). The experimental results reveal that oligothiophenes are very ef
fective conjugation units offering substantial enhancement of the seco
nd-order polarizability with increasing chain length.
