A candidate for the male sex-determining gene has recently been isolat
ed. This sex-determining gene (SRY) has been found to be mutated in so
me individuals with failed testis development, and, in mouse transgene
sis, the SRY murine homologue (Sry) causes female-to-male sex reversal
. The cloning of SRY should facilitate the characterisation of other g
enes in the testis-determining pathway and provide information on the
mechanism of mammalian developmental decisions.
