It is shown that defects of rotation type form in polycrystals during
the plastic deformation process at junctions and kinks of grain bounda
ries. Their geometric properties are analysed and it is proved that in
general these defects cannot be reduced to disclinations, but represe
nt more complex linear-planar entities. The analysis shows that dipole
s of defects of rotation type appear at ledges of boundaries. Such led
ges are considered as dipole sources of the partial disclinations.
