It is shown that a large ring substituent such as -OC2H5 causes the po
lyaniline HCl salt to form a different crystal structure. Though there
is substantial crystallinity, the bulky side groups make it more diff
icult to achieve three-dimensional metallic delocalization and, for th
e samples studied, the conduction electrons behave as if localized to
single chains.
