THE NUCLEAR GENE FOR SUBUNIT-VC OF SWEET-POTATO CYTOCHROME-C-OXIDASE

We have cloned the gene for subunit Vc of sweet potato cytochrome c ox idase using its cDNA as a probe. There is a single intron, located one nucleotide upstream of the start of the open reading frame. No typica l TATA-box sequence is present in the region upstream of the site of i nitiation of transcription in the cloned genomic DNA, suggesting that an alternative sequence may function in control of the expression of t his gene. The nuclear genome of sweet potato contains only a single sp ecies of gene for subunit Vc.
