Aspects of ''operationalism'' are presented as applied to coordinates
in special and general relativity. In this context Einstein's equivale
nce principle is discussed as it applies to operational gedanken (thou
ght) experiments. A comparison is shown in the approach of Einstein an
d others to the fundamental metric of general relativity. A ''relaxed'
' interpretation of the term ''operational'' is given, and examples of
such operational methods are shown.
